What is Dedicated Internet Access?

What is Cybersecurity?

Cyber Security refers to the practice of protecting users, devices, networks, and programs from digital attacks. These cyberattacks are usually aimed at accessing, changing, or destroying sensitive information, extorting money from users, or interrupting normal business operations. Implementing effective cybersecurity measures is particularly challenging today because there are more devices than people, and attackers are becoming more innovative.

Section I

What is Dedicated Internet Access? (DIA)

Dedicated Internet Access (DIA) is a type of internet service that provides a direct, private connection to the internet for a specific user or organisation. Unlike shared internet services, such as broadband connections that may experience congestion and fluctuations in speed due to shared usage, DIA offers a consistent and reliable internet connection that is reserved solely for the customer.

Section II

How does DIA work?

DIA establishes a private leased line between a business’s network and the ISP’s infrastructure, bypassing public internet congestion. Key components include:

  • Fiber-optic/Ethernet circuits for high-speed data transfer.

  • Carrier-grade routing to maintain performance.

  • SLA-backed uptime (e.g., Orixcom’s 99.999% guarantee).

Section III

Types of DIA Services

Fiber-optic DIA

Fiber-optic DIA uses thin strands of glass or plastic fibres to transmit data as light pulses. This method provides extremely high speeds and large bandwidth capacities, making it the most advanced form of DIA. Fibre-optic DIA is known for its exceptional reliability and performance, offering speeds that can range from 100 Mbps to several Gbps. It is less susceptible to electromagnetic interference and can maintain signal integrity over long distances, making it ideal for businesses with high data demands.

T1 and T3 Lines

T1 and T3 lines are older forms of dedicated internet connections. A T1 line provides a fixed bandwidth of 1.544 Mbps, while a T3 line offers 44.736 Mbps. Although these lines are less common today due to advancements in technology, they still offer dedicated and reliable connectivity. T1 lines can be bonded together to increase bandwidth, but they are generally considered slower and more expensive compared to modern fibre-optic solutions.

Ethernet DIA

Ethernet DIA utilises Ethernet technology to deliver dedicated internet services. This type of DIA is popular because it is cost-effective and can be easily scaled according to business needs. Ethernet DIA can support various speeds, typically ranging from 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps, and provides a robust and flexible solution for businesses. It leverages existing Ethernet infrastructure, which can reduce installation times and costs.

Wireless DIA

Wireless DIA uses radio signals to establish a dedicated internet connection. This method is beneficial in areas where laying physical cables is challenging or impractical. Wireless DIA can provide high-speed connectivity, although it may be more susceptible to environmental factors such as weather conditions. It is often used as a backup connection or in remote locations where other forms of DIA are unavailable.

Section IV

What are the benefits of Dedicated Internet Access?

Geographical Availability

The availability of DIA services can vary significantly based on geographical location. It is essential to ensure that the chosen provider offers services in the desired area. Some providers may have extensive coverage in urban areas but limited availability in rural or remote regions. Assessing the geographical availability of DIA services can help in selecting a provider that can meet the business’s location-specific needs.

Pricing Structures

Pricing for DIA services can vary widely depending on the provider, the type of connection, and the required bandwidth. It is important to compare the pricing structures of different providers and understand what is included in the cost. Some providers may offer bundled services or discounts for long-term contracts. Evaluating the cost against the benefits and features offered can help in making an informed decision.

Bandwidth Options

Different businesses have different bandwidth requirements. It is crucial to assess the available bandwidth options and select a provider that can offer the required capacity. Consider future growth and scalability when choosing bandwidth options to ensure that the service can accommodate increasing demands over time. Providers that offer flexible and scalable bandwidth solutions can be advantageous for growing businesses.

Service Level Agreements (SLAs)

SLAs are critical in ensuring the reliability and performance of DIA services. These agreements define the level of service that the provider commits to delivering, including uptime guarantees, response times, and penalties for non-compliance. Reviewing and comparing the SLAs offered by different providers can help in selecting a service that aligns with the business’s reliability and performance expectations.

Network Coverage

The extent and quality of a provider’s network coverage can impact the performance and reliability of DIA services. Providers with extensive and well-maintained networks are more likely to offer consistent and high-quality connections. Evaluating the provider’s network infrastructure, including the presence of redundant paths and backup options, can provide insights into the expected performance and reliability of the service.

Section V

Factors to Consider when selecting a DIA Provider

Choosing the right DIA provider can directly impact your business productivity and user experience. Here are key considerations:

  • Geographical availability – Ensure the provider can deliver high-performance DIA to your specific location.

  • Pricing structures – Transparent pricing based on speed tiers or committed information rate (CIR).

  • Bandwidth options – Flexible plans that can scale with your business growth.

  • SLAs – Guarantees around uptime, latency, and support response times.

  • Network coverage – The wider the network footprint, the better the performance and redundancy.
